Outline of the Practice
Dr. Kavanagh's practice is limited to the treatment of adults, older adolescents and couples. He specializes in the psychotherapy of both symptom disorders (such as obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety states, depression and bi-polar disorder) and also the so called personality disorders that involve repetitive patterns of self-defeating behavior. The treatment modalities used are suited to the particular needs and situation of each patient. The approach may involve longer term psychoanalysis or psychodynamic psychotherapy, especially in the treatment of personality disorders. For problems with a clearly delineated focus, short term psychodynamic psychotherapy or cognitive-behavioral therapy may be the treatment of choice.
Experience with Special Patient Populations
- Dr. Kavanagh has worked extensively with patients from the Asia Pacific region and is also proficient in conversational Mandarin Chinese.
- As a consultant for several years at the Juilliard School Dr. Kavanagh is experienced in the particular problems of performing artists and has treated many performers in his private practice.
- Having been recommended for over 20 years by the Mental Health Services of Columbia University to treat university students, Dr. Kavanagh has extensive experience in treating students of all ages.
Use of Medication
For some patients the most effective treatment requires a combination of psychotherapy and medication. In such cases Dr. Kavanagh works closely with a psychiatric colleague to whom referrals are made for evaluation and the prescription of medication. Patients who are already receiving psychopharmacological care from their own psychiatrist or internist are asked to permit Dr. Kavanagh to liaise with the treating physician, in order to ensure the best possible outcome of treatment.
